Grow Well, Not Old!

Most researchers believe that the maximum life span in humans is slightly over 110 years. Scientist believe that we should not experience a steady decline in health starting in our thirties, but rather live successfully into our 80’s before bodily systems begin to decline. Due to the improvements in sanitation, the discovery of antibiotics, and medical care, the average life expectancy in the United States has increased from about 47 years in 1900 to about 75 years in 1990.

The past Surgeon General has estimated that close to 85% of our most dreaded diseases could be prevented with appropriate lifestyle changes, including a good nutritional plan, and regular exercise. Proper healthy life style behaviors and sensible exercise would not only prevent disease and untimely death but also improve the quality of one’s life.

We at ISSA are devoted to drawing as many people worldwide into a lifestyle of fitness so that they can experience not only a good lifestyle or a better lifestyle but the best possible lifestyle based in Fitness for Life. Dr. Devoirs of USC has shown that men and women in their seventies and eighties can achieve levels of vigor associated with people 30 years younger. Regular daily physical activity can raise the fitness level of a 65-year-old to that of an average sedentary 30 year old.

The principles of a fitness lifestyle are illustrated dramatically in Mr. Charles Thiele. Charles, who is trained by Gustavo Rendon, is a 95-year-old gentleman who lives the fitness lifestyle. He regularly engages in resistance training three days a week and runs 20 miles a week. He is currently working as a landscaper and gardener for more than 10 clients. His devotion and unbridled enthusiasm is contagious to all those around him. Our devotion to fitness at all ages has resulted in the ISSA Specialist in Fitness for Older Adults, and we will continue to educate our students on the values of a fitness lifestyle to Grow Well Not Old.
